England WU20s' route in the World Cup knockouts

England women’s under-20s have booked their place in the Round of 16 at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup and will now take on Nigeria in the first phase of the knockout stages on Thursday 17 September (2pm BST).

The Young Lionesses went into their final group game with Brazil on Friday on four points and in second place in Group B, and went 1-0 up through Lily Dent in the first half before Brazil's late turnaround with a penalty from Clarinha and a stoppage-time winner.

Canada, who were three points behind England before playing Tanzania in their final match, needed the Young Lionesses to lose and an eight-goal swing to guarantee second spot.

They fell one goal short, with a 6-0 victory over Tanzania, but Lydia Bedford's side finished above Canada due to having a better conduct score across the group games.

In their first two matches, England drew 1-1 with Canada and secured a 5-1 victory over Tanzania. Brazil topped the group on nine points.

Round of 16 details

Finishing second means that they will play their Round of 16 tie on Thursday 17 September (2pm BST kick-off) against the team that places second in Group F in Bielkso-Biala, where all of England’s group games have been played so far.

And England’s opponents were confirmed as Nigeria on Sunday afternoon, following the finale of Group F when they beat New Caledonia by 10-1 to finish in second spot to Spain.
 
Knockout stage route

If England progress from the Round of 16, their quarter-final tie will be at 2pm BST on Sunday 20 September, at Stadion Miejski ŁKS Łódź, in Łódź.

Their opponents would be Poland, the top side in Group A and the host nation, or one of the best third-place finishers from either Group C, D or E.

Łódź is also the venue for the semi-final in the Young Lionesses’ half of the draw, which will take place at 5.30pm BST on Wednesday 23 September.

And the final of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup is at 5pm BST on Sunday 27 September, again in Łódź.
