Goals from Jess Carter, Georgia Stanway and Beth Mead saw England end their FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 group-stage qualifying campaign with a 3-0 win over Ukraine.

England will now go into the qualifying play-offs after Spain’s win over Iceland confirmed a second-place finish on goal difference for the 2023 World Cup runners-ups in Group A3.

Sarina Wiegman's side didn't take long to find their feet in the game, and Carter became the first England player to score a goal at the Hill Dickinson Stadium in Liverpool with Stanway adding a second before half-time.

The Lionesses dominated the game with many set-pieces, the best of which was Mead’s free-kick on 67 minutes.

Looking for a response to their 4-0 loss to Spain on Friday night, the Lionesses started brightly with set-piece following set-piece as Ukraine looked to shut down England’s attacks.
The first corner of the game saw Lauren James’ delightful looping effort hit the bar and bounce luckily underneath Ukraine’s goalkeeper Kateryna Boklach and into her hands.

The shotstopper was not so lucky at the next corner, which England took short, as James danced to the edge of the box before sending a cross that Carter headed home to hand the Lionesses the lead on 14 minutes.

Carter was then called on to close down Ukraine’s first foray forward as Tanya Boychuk battled with the Gotham defender, who was easily able to dispossess the number nine.

Almost immediately down the other end, England earned three set-pieces in a row, a corner then two free-kicks, as Ukraine began to show their frustration with James’ skill.

Lauren Hemp’s effort was well saved by Boklach, who was then forced into a leap to save Alessia Russo’s on-target header.

The game began to settle, much to Ukraine’s relief, but they couldn't get to half time without conceding again as Stanway scored on 37 minutes.

A nicely worked goal started with captain Keira Walsh feeding Russo, who selflessly squared the ball across the box for Stanway to tap in. That revitalised England with James and Hemp seeing efforts just go wide

Both teams made two changes at the break, with James not getting a chance to add a goal to her assist as she made way for Mead while Alex Greenwood replaced Esme Morgan at a familiar venue having started her career with Everton.

Niamh Charles did well to work herself into space and meet Maya Le Tissier’s free-kick, however at a difficult angle she could only direct it wide.

Boklach was then called into action again as England caught Ukraine out with Carter starting a move that end with the 'keeper denying Hemp at close range.

Her palms were stung again when Russo unleashed a powerful shot that Boklach could only parry away before the defence cleared to safety.

The second-half resistance was broken on 67 minutes when Mead fired a wonderful free-kick into the bottom corner for her 40th England goal, to join Fara Williams at fifth on the Lionesses all-time list.

Mead was denied a second late on as a long-range effort was palmed away as Ukraine’s disciplined efforts prevented any further Lionesses goals.
