Alexia Putellas scored twice as England’s perfect FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 qualifying record was ended by a 4-0 defeat to Spain.
Putellas scored either side of the break in Mallorca, after Patri Guijarro had opened the scoring with a powerful drive inside 20 minutes.
Clàudia Pina wrapped up all three points for Spain late on as the Estadio Mallorca Son Moix, as the hosts took control of UEFA League A Group 3.
The two nations are joint on 12 points, with Spain boasting a superior goal difference ahead of England’s final qualifier against Ukraine at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Tuesday.
Spain started the brightest, with Putellas the first to have a real sight of goal but her header was wide of the target from Lucía Corrales’ cross.
Mariona Caldentey also saw an effort off target after good work from Salma Paralluelo before England earned their first chance of the night, with Keira Walsh firing a shot just over the bar from the edge of the area.
Spain then made the breakthrough a minute later, as Guijarro pounced on a loose ball in the England half, surged towards goal and fired a deflected strike past Hannah Hampton.
Spain immediately looked for a second, with Paralluelo again involved. This time her cross found Edna Imade, whose header was easily held by Hampton.
The England goalkeeper was called into action again shortly after, as Spain won the ball high up the pitch and found Putellas but her shot was straight at Hampton.
The hosts were well on top as the game approached the half hour but were unable to take full advantage, as Paralluelo fired a tame effort towards Hampton after dispossessing Lauren James inside the England half.
Spanish pressure continued but the Lionesses remained a threat on the break, with James breezing past three defenders before clipping a dangerous cross that could not be met by a teammate.
The game began to open up in Mallorca, with Vicky Lopez inches away from doubling Spain’s lead after dribbling through the England defence before Hampton smothered the loose ball.
But Hampton could ultimately not deny the home side from making it 2-0 before the break, as Putellas was played in behind the Lionesses defence and finished powerfully.
Paralluelo had a chance to make it three before half time as she raced away from an England corner, but the winger was excellently stopped by Esme Morgan.
The Lionesses looked to force their way back into the match and came close to doing so ten minutes after the restart, as Georgia Stanway flashed a drive just wide of the post after picking up a bouncing ball on the edge of the Spanish area.
But the hosts made it 3-0 just a minute later, as Putellas netted her second of the evening.
The midfielder forced it home at the second attempt after her initial effort was blocked on the line by Lucy Bronze, following excellent work down the wing by Ona Battle.
Guijarro then came close to doubling her tally, but her header was acrobatically tipped onto the crossbar by Hampton.
Spain were full of confidence and Lopez came close to getting on the scoresheet, but her shot found the side-netting after intricate play with Guijarro.
The Lionesses continued to fight for a foothold and came close to doing to as they found their way in behind down the left before Bronze’s effort was smothered by the Spanish defence.
The game was put beyond doubt with just under 15 minutes to play, as Aitana Bonmatí found fellow substitute Pina in the box and the latter cut inside and converted a fourth for Spain.
